Fuel marketers in Ekiti State on Monday shut down their filling stations following a disagreement with the state government on conditions to set up new fuel stations.
The state government ?had, following a recent fire outbreak in a fuel station in Ado-Ekiti, clamped down on dealers who locate their businesses in residential and unauthorized areas.
Also, the state government frowned at the situation whereby some fuel dealers did not insure their business premises, but only insured their products.
Motorists across the state woke up on Monday to meet all fuel stations shut down.
Speaking on the development, Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, said he woud not compromise the safety and security of the people under the pretext of people doing business.
“We don’t want a repeat of what happened few weeks ago in Ado-Ekiti. The fire outbreak in Ado-Ekiti here destroyed properties worth millions of naira. The owner of the station said he did not insure his business premises but he didn’t forget to insure his products. We will also not allow indiscriminate location of fuel stations. We will not allow anybody to blackmail us to doing anything that is not good,” he said.
