UNIBEN Disowns Don Over HIV/AIDS Drug Discovery

In less than 48 hours after his claim of a major breakthrough in  HIV/AIDS cure, Prof Isaiah Ibeh Dean of School of Basic Medical Sciences ,University of Benin [Uniben]  was yesterday disown  by the school authorities.

Prof. Ibeh had on Tuesday announced the breakthrough in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Benin, capital of Edo State.

According to him "We are at threshold of making history in the sense that we seem to have with us something that will permanently take care of what overtime seems to have defied all solutions. We are talking about the latest discovery of an oral drug made from plant extraction in Nigeria for the possible cure of the pandemic, HIV and AIDS virus.

"The School would like to take credit for a breakthrough, but the School cannot align with the breakthrough because the College was not consulted, the University was not consulted, he did not carry anybody along."

Meanwhile the Provost, College of Medical Sciences of UNIBEN, Mr. Vincent Iyawe who spoke with newsmen in Benin  Wednesday said  the University was  not aware  of Prof. Ibeh  claims ‘’ the  Institution was not "carried along" in the research.

"The School would like to take credit for a breakthrough, but the School cannot align with the breakthrough because the College was not consulted, the University was not consulted, he did not carry anybody along.

"There are protocols and procedures.  Going from stage by stage, we give it clinical trials which will take it to the. Federal Ministry of Health to do clinical trial and many other things involved. We will equally have to take it to NAFDAC, and many other things have to be done before you come out with your claims, and even take it to the World Health Organisation."

But in his reaction  Prof. Ibeh said  "I will naturally maintained a studied silence."

Seriously? This is really senseless though. Who cares if he 'didn't carry anybody along'? What they are supposed to do is attempt to verify his claim and see if it's true. It seems unlikely that it is true, but on the off chance that it were, is that what they're going to say? He didn't carry anybody along so we don't care if he made a groundbreaking discovery? Naija sef.

Very laughable idea! How can a University denounce the claim of one of it's esteemed members like that without exposing itself to ridicle? What do we make of their system when a whole Prof can go to press without following due process? What do they expect the whole world to believe now about breakthroughs from Africa? I think they should put their house in order and stop washing their dirty linens before the whole world.
