The President, Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities (ASUU), Mr. Nasir Fegge has criticised the review of the 1999 constitution saying it is not the solution to Nigeria’s problems.
Nigeria’s National Assembly has set itself the task of reviewing the constitution insisting that the process is to correct some inadequacies in the constitution.
Members of the Constitution Review Committee are expected to go round 336 constituencies in the country.
According to Mr. Fegge, rather than review the 1999 constitution, a new constitution should be drawn up for the country because the old one was a making of the military.
His words:"an alternative constitution should be made for Nigeria. The 1999 constitution is faulty in so many ways."
But speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal put dismissed the call for a referendum by some Nigerians insisting that a referendum was not an option that was been considered by the House since it is unconstitutional.
According to Mr. Tambuwal, "I consider it imperative, both in my capacity as the Speaker and head of the institution to midwife the Constitutional Review process and also as a Legal Practitioner, to offer opinion on our preference for the peoples public Sessions rather than referendum".
