A chieftain of the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze, Mr. Emma Nwankpa, has been shot by unknown gunmen.
Mr. Nwankpa, was accosted by assailants at the entrance of his house.
According to reports, though Mr. Nwankpa offered the gunmen his wallet for them to spare him but it fell on deaf ears as they shot him on his two legs after collecting the wallet and speeded off in a car.
The attack on Mr. Nwankpa comes on the eve of the election for the position of Deputy President of Ohaneze Ndigbo.
Nwankpa, who is now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital did not participate in Saturday's election which he lost to his only opponent, Chief OAU Onyema.
Enugu State Police spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident, said the police was already investigating the attack.
