Nigeria’s Sports Commission (NSC) has set up an Athletes Observatory Team for the 18th National Sports Festival to help it identify budding sports talents.

According to the Minister of Sports, Mr. Bold Abdullahi, the Athletes Observatory Team will monitor and identify talents who are expected to form the crop of athletes that will be groomed for future international elite competitions.

Mr. Abdullahi while noting that the Sports Festival has been a veritable ground for talents discovery over time said the Commission was in the process of introducing an annual National Under-17 championship, which he disclosed would be strictly a age-grade competition where sports talents will be identified and subsequently nurtured.

The minister added that the Commission was contemplating reviewing the eligibility rules in order to make the National Sports Festival an open competition from the next edition.

“This will ensure that the games become keener as it will attract the best athletes to participate in the festival from within Nigeria and the Diaspora,” the Minister said.
