The Nigerian Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have refused to disclose the cause of death in custody of Mr. Desmond Nunugwo, a chief protocol officer, in the ministry of Defence, on Thursday, June 9, 2016.

The family are alleging that the EFCC killed the deceased in custody saying there was no explanation the commission would give to justify the death of the deceased.

Mr. Nunugwo according to the EFCC died in its custody, six hours after been arrested by agents of the Commission led by one Shuaibu and the case according to them was reported at the Maitama Police Station for investigations.

The commission through its spokesman Mr. Wilson Uwujaren had on several inquiries by our correspondent said  “The incident has been reported to the police for investigation. Direct your questions to the police, please”.

When our correspondent pressed further for more information, he simply dismissed the question by saying “the suspect’s death is a matter being handled by the Nigeria Police. Only the police is competent to speak on a matter being handled by the Nigeria Police! EFCC can speak on the fraud the suspect allegedly perpetrated”.

Several inquiries made by our correspondent to get information from the police on what led to the death of the suspect at the Maitama Police Station proved abortive as the police too kept sealed lips on the outcome of their investigations.

A senior crime officer at the station, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonimity said though the case was reported at the station,  “the case was not really a police matter but the EFCC” insisting that “the police only did what was expected of it as professional” and  referred our correspondent back to the EFCC for any details on the investigation.

The police officer noted that since it was the EFCC that reported the matter; “the EFCC is the only authorised body to issue any statement regarding the investigation or its outcome”.

Our investigations revealed that deceased, who family sources said had no known case of high blood pressure or any known terminal ailment, was arrested in his lawyer’s friend office, in Utako, at about 5.30pm on the fateful Thursday.

The family members are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to wade into the death of their son and punish those culpable in the death of the late Desmond.

“The death of Desmond won’t be allowed to just go like that. We are going to fight to get to the root of his death,” a family member who spoke in confidence to our correspondent said.

Our correspondent’s investigations revealed that a lawyer simply addressed as Chinedum, identified as the deceased personal friend, disclosed that the late Desmond came to visit him in his office on the fateful Thursday and that when he arrived, they bought corn and were eating when suddenly he got a call from one lady who the deceased claimed was a friend and was subsequently arrested.
