Scores of pipeline vandals were killed on Wednesday in Lagos following an explosion from a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline .

According to reports, the number of the victims, though as yet unascertained, runs into dozens.

Sources say they might be as many as a hundred.

At the time our correspondent visited the scene, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were seen still loitering at the scene but couldn’t do much to salvage the situation due to the magnitude of the fire.

Oil Vandals

Locals who gave erratic versions of the incident said that the fire erupted when one of the vandals fired shots at the pipeline, thereby sparking off a wild, uncontrollable fire.

Another version said that a different group arrived the venue with their own set of containers and equipments but met resistance from the group already on ground.

Trouble ensued, and in the resultant exchange, they while attacking each other, sparked off the fire that eventually swallowed all of them.

Yet, another version said that the leader of the second group ordered his boys to break another spot on the pipeline to commence the operation when the leader of the first group angrily fired the shot that eventually sparked the fire that killed them.

We gathered that few of the vandals survived with varying degrees of burns

Local residents are, meanwhile, calling on the relevant authorities to come to their aid, following the incessant fires caused by vandals.
