Nigeria’s Senate Tuesday screened 10 of the first batch of ministerial nominees forwarded to it by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Those who were screened are Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, Dr. Kayode fayemi, Mr. Audu Ogbe, Mr. Lai Mohammed and Ms. Amina Mohammed.

Others are Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Suleiman Adamu and Dr. Osagie Ehanire.

First to be screened was a former member of the Senate, Udo Udoma and rather than being asked to take a bow in line with the Senate tradition, he was questioned by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

“I will do my best to help in tackling the challenges in the public sector. With the dwindling oil prices, public finances are under pressure.

“We cannot rely on public sector investment alone, if we want to turn the economy around. Therefore, we have to encourage private sector investment. One of the ways to encourage them is to give them assurance of consistency because private sector investors want consistency in economic policies.

“We have to increase our investment rate to 30%. We have to review our tax policies, and I will help, if confirmed, to review our tax policies so that it will become a viable revenue source for Nigeria,” Senator Udoma submitted while answering question on the economy.

APC spokesperson, Lai Mohammed was asked to take a bow but said few words before he took his seat, “I stand before you to seek your support to be confirmed as minister.

“If I am screened, I will be as passionate, committed and patriotic as I was when I was in the opposition,” he said.

Meanwhile, none of the nominees screened was confirmed. It is expected that the confirmation would be done on Wednesday after the remaining 11 nominees on the first batch list must have been screened.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, had earlier at resumption of plenary read out additional 15 ministerial nominees sent by the President on Monday.
