Residence Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, Nasiru Ayilara, said Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would have to extend the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) in the state because of the late arrival of cards.

He also said that fresh registration would have to be held in some council areas of the state, where major problems relating to the exercise were discovered by INEC.

Ayilara stated this when newsmen confronted him with the electorates’ complaints in parts of the state. The PVC distribution was scheduled to hold between Friday and Sunday while further exercises will begin later in the week.

But on Saturday, many people complained that the exercise was poorly planned as cards did not arrive in many council areas.

A former governor of the state, Adebayo Alao-Akala, also expressed displeasure over the exercise in a statement he released, alleging that INEC was not transparent enough in the way it handled the PVC distribution.

In response to the allegation and other complaints, Ayilara said all voters would get their cards before the next election in 2015.

“We do not have enough PVC material to distribute right now, but more consignment has arrived and we will distribute them immediately. Despite the challenges, we are still able to distribute large number of the cards to voters.

“As at Friday, we have distributed over 226,000 cards. By the end of Saturday, we would have distributed up to 500,000 cards out of the over two million cards expected to be distributed in Oyo State. With the situation on ground, we need more days to complete the exercise,” explained the REC.

He added that it was likely that the commission would work until Monday in order to distribute the cards in its possession as at Saturday.
